  • Harajuku kiddy Land, a center for Cawaii culture: Cute Shopping in Tokyo

    https://pin.it/2hTSCv15t

    Harajuku always has something.
    It’s so cawaii !

Character goods on display at Kiddy Land in Harajuku, Tokyo
Kiddy Land in Harajuku. Photo: Segaijin

A shop that has been here for a long time

Kiddy Land began in 1950 as a small bookshop in the Harajuku and Omotesando area. Today it is one of the best-loved character shops in Tokyo, a place where children and grown-ups both stop to smile.

    Finding it

The shop is on Omotesando Avenue, in Jingumae. It is about a three-minute walk from Meiji-jingumae Station, and about seven minutes from the Omotesando exit of JR Harajuku Station. Opening hours and the contents of each floor can change, so please check the official website before you visit.

    Why I love going

Whenever I go, I end up looking at everything. Each floor has its own little world, and every time I pass through, something is new: a seasonal display, a new character, a new color. It never feels the same twice, and that is the reason I want to visit again and again.

I took the photo above in the summer of 2024. From now on, I would like to take a photo from the same corner every year, and quietly watch how this little town of characters changes with the seasons.

    A small note for travelers

If you are visiting Tokyo, Kiddy Land is easy to enjoy even in a short time, because it sits right on the way between Harajuku and Omotesando. It is lovely to look around, even if you do not buy anything.

Is there a shop from your childhood that still makes you smile when you walk by?

  • 「Your Wonders ⁇of Japan 」What is general garbage? trash?一般ゴミ

In Japan, trash cans are not provided and people are encouraged to take their trash home (or to the hotel where you are staying).

    It is surprising, isn’t it?

    This is culture shock!

    日本ではゴミ箱が設置されず、家に持って帰る(或いは滞在先ホテル)ことが推奨される文化です。驚きですよね。これぞカルチャーショック!

    たまに見かける

    “一般ゴミ”って何かしら?

一般ゴミGeneral waste refers to small combustibles generated by households in the course of daily life. This includes kitchen garbage, paper, cloth, and small plastic products, as well as small combustibles such as shoes, bags, and video tapes.

In Japan, it is customary to take garbage home with you.

After seeing colorful azaleas, take a 30-minute walk from Nezu to the Ogai Memorial Museum in Sendagi.

It is said that Ogai of old days took a walk
While walking in the quiet residential area of today
You will notice that there are many hills.

    That’s why it’s called Dangozaka.団子坂

Finally, I found a cawaii hamburger shop that just opened near the station!

The burgers were delicious, as was the homemade ketchup!

What should I do for the rest of the day in Tokyo?
